My name is Nick Sorrentino, and I am a Senior from St. Louis, Missouri. Here at Bradley, I’m a part of the Bradley University Hockey Team, both playing for the team and working on the board as Secretary and as a Graphic Designer for the club. With that in mind, it should be no surprise that I’m a huge hockey fan, and yes, I know it isn’t super popular in the Illinois area, but I am a huge Blues fan. When it comes to my work, I like to keep things technical, yet innovative, following my sources of inspiration while giving the pieces my own personal touch. I like to keep things lighthearted and fun, while always looking on the bright side of things and keeping a positive attitude. However, I know when it’s time to take things seriously during those “crunch time” situations. I’m also always willing to learn and grow my skills as a graphic designer whenever I can.

The Peoria Zoo was looking for a fresh new look for their app, and a sleek, modern take was created. While designing the interface of the app, it was important to incorporate the colors and branding of the Peoria Zoo, using their greens, browns, tans, and oranges. It was also important to modernize the design, including gradients in backgrounds for the app. Another crucial component was to keep the audience engaged while they were at the zoo , and even when they are sitting at home. A rewards system was designed to keep the audience active and involved while they were visiting the zoo. The user would accumulate points that could be spent in the app for free food, tickets, and merchandising.

Walmart was sponsoring a frozen meal to be sold at stores, and a package for Homestead Café was born. With this packaging design, the idea of a homestyle breakfast became clear, and Homestead Café was born. The idea was to make a packaging to give a feeling a warmness and comfort with the design, so the use of warm colors, and a rounded sans serif font was used to emphasize that feeling. The imagery and colors were also used to convey a message that this package, and the meal inside, would remind the audience member of the time when they are at their grandparent’s house, and was eating a nice, warm, homemade meal.

When the Visual Voices Lecture Series needed a poster for their upcoming events, a design from the roots of Typography was born. Visual Voices is all about the fundamentals of Typography, and how important it is in the grand scheme of Graphic Design. The beginnings of the design process, all the way to the final execution, it was always about demonstrating the basics of design and exposing these roots before those attending listened to the speaker. The use of the grid system and type hierarchy was crucial in this design, directing the viewer’s eye to the flow of information and making sure they understood the who, what, when, why, and where. Color theory was also an important aspect of this design with finding colors that grabbed the viewers attention but harmonized together to create a dynamic where it was easy to read and enjoyable to look at.

In a personal piece, a round at Kellogg Golf Course was recorded and illustrated in an graphic information design piece. Golf has tons of information to keep track of outside of the score, including shot placement, average yards with each club, shot placement, how many putts it took to sink the ball in, and much more. In this piece, I wanted to use elements of golf to represent the information that was being displayed. This includes a driving range to show how far each club can hit, a hole on the course to show shot placement and how many putts it took to sink the ball, and a scorecard to record my performance on the course. All while choosing colors to keep to the theme of Golf.

When a call to switch to the metric system arises, inspiration from a German style enforces the message When brainstorming about the term “Go Metric”, the idea of incorporating geometric shapes was the first idea that crossed my mind. Looking at the Bauhaus style of design, it helped enhance this idea even further. The consistency of geometric shapes aligned with the consistency of measurements in the metric system. Marks or ticks on a measurement stick were also included to give visual aid on the metric system, with those marks being spaced out by “tens”. Infographics were also included to see how everyday sights and objects were measured in the metric system.

Celebrating 55 years of hockey, and coming off of one of the best seasons in club history, something was needed to cement it in history While designing this 48-page magazine for the Bradley University Hockey Club, I wanted it to have a combination of typed articles, information graphics, and pictures from games to capture the events of the season. It was important to use the club’s colors as to keep the piece on brand, and to use those colors in ways that the magazine wouldn’t be boring. I also included edited images that had an emphasis on the reds as section breakers for the regular season, conference playoffs, and regional playoffs.

A poetry collection about the circus demands a design inspired by an older era. While designing the book cover for this collection of poetry, it was important to look at the content of the poetry at relate it to imagery of the circus. In the circus, the audience see an assortment of jesters, elephants, lions and trapeze artists, which are represented in the corners of the front and back cover. The use of a “royalty” design and colors were used to give the design of an “old-time” feeling that reflects that the circus has been around for ages.

The Mutual Insurance Company of Arizona was looking a fresh new look while remaining familiar with existing customers While being in charge of the designing the website for MICA, it was important to give it a new look to attract a younger and new audience, while keeping it recognizable to their older and existing audience. Looking at the existing website, it seemed outdated but still functional. With this design, incorporating their established brand’s colors, the use of a modern sans serif font, utilizing the negative space, and emphasizing the important information to make it easy to read, was important in the design of this re-design.

Earth Day was releasing its annual magazine discussing Global Warming, and one of the most impacted states was used, Alaska. Alaska is normally seen as the state that is lush and full of wilderness, however in 2019, it suffered one of its hottest summers ever reordered and was plagued by wildfires, and receding glaciers at an abnormal rate. To stress the drastic change in Alaska’s climate, a big and bold font was used in the headlines with imagery and colors to match the disasters occurring in the state. This is to stress the effects of Climate Change that has been hurting the state of Alaska.

National Geographic wanted a graphic pull-put spread remembering the Tsunami and Earthquake that occurred 10 years ago in Japan While designing this information graphic spread, I wanted to incorporate some sort of symbolism with the information, so the use of Japan’s colors stuck out to me. The use of the graphic that represents the epicenter of the earthquake was meant to represent the “rising sun” of the Japanese flag. With the rest of the design, it was important to make the graphics speak clearly for themselves, instead of relying on text to describe what happened
