Originally from Carol Stream, IL this Chicago land area graphic designer, Benjamin Rodrigues has been residing in Peoria, IL for the past several years studying at Bradley University. He has been studying graphic design as well as social media marketing and is expected to graduate in May 2022. Originally a fine arts artist he evolved into a designer in high school where he started taking his first design courses. While there he started his design career by designing several logos and other designs for the fine arts department at Glenbard North High school.
Moving into college he continued his love for design when he joined the Activities Council of Bradley University and was able to practice his craft and get more experience. Through the Activities Council of Bradley University, he was able to get more experience and practice through many other positions across the Bradley University campus with the Smith Career Center, Student Activities office, and more! He also has gained professional experience through his time interning in several companies such as Lumisource in Elk Grove Village, IL, and Spirit Consulting in Oakbrook, IL.

Lizzo Spread 3
For this Magazine, I created a set of magazine spreads for a magazine that each issue focuses on a musical artist and shares their story and goes beyond just their music. This issue focuses on Minnesota native Lizzo. Most Magazines are photo heavy so I wanted to make sure that I included lots of photos of Lizzo. I used each spread as a way to highlight a different part of Lizzo, her music, and her past. The first spread I showed had a brief intro about her and what she stands for and draws from within her music. For the next spread, I talked more about her history as an artist and how she became the global superstar she is today. For the final spread, I shared a timeline of her music from when she started as an artist to where it has brought her to now.

For the 2021 concert, Tina Fey and Amy Pohler came virtually to campus. Due to the virtual matter of the concert as well as the changing atmosphere of COVID-19, there had to be very flexible designs. I researched last year’s designs for Recess and decided to play off the geometric shapes that are consistently used. There were many aspects sthat had to go into the concert, poster design, social media designs, stickers, t-shirt designs for staff as well as giveaways, yard signs tv screen advertisements, and more.

Each poster was for a different event where I had to work with a team of individuals to make the poster to their liking. Each poster had to be designed for various artists and sizes of events. When approaching each design I researched different colors and typefaces that would go well with each of the posters and the aesthetics around them. They also had to follow the previously decided brand guidelines to keep constant with the image of ACBU.

The Activities Council of Bradley University (ACBU) was in need of a brand redesign and social media cohesion. I created the existing logo and established a new set of posting guidelines for social media. The old Instagram was filled with inconsistent designs and images that made the account’s image seem messy, incohesive, and not true to the organization’s brand. I created a template where there would be approximately 70 different borders that would shift color as each of the borders was used, to keep the social media image clean and consistent. The simplified logo in the corner maintains ACBU’s true brand and makes it easily identifiable to anyone scrolling through their feed

For this project, I created a magazine spread for the Japanese disaster in 2011. For this design, it would be used as a centerfold that expands to have two extra panels. The task was to include as much information about the disaster as possible. I wanted to approach the design by making sure to show information about the demographic, economic, environmental, and geographical effects on Japan. There were several other aspects that I wanted to highlight to show more of the background behind the event and how big of an event it was. So I created a timeline that spread through the entire spread to show what happened during the first week after the disaster. I also had several callouts that illustrated the damage and how it compares to other disasters similar to this one.

The Peoria Zoo needed a redesign of its wayfinding app for when in the park. They also needed help to try to increase usage of their app as well as keep the app downloaded even when not in the park. I wanted to redesign the app and add new features that would make it a one-stop place for all things Peoria zoo. Within the app, I added features such as a Live feed to see various animals in their exhibits even not when in the zoo. I also created a new wayfinding portion of the app where it breaks down the map into smaller sections so it’s easier to navigate. There is also an AR portion that can be turned on that shows you how to get to any exhibit within the zoo. Finally, I created a home screen where you can get to any portion of the app such as the schedule, ticket purchases, a game zone, zoo rewards, the live stream of exhibits, and restaurants within the zoo.

Welcome Week Journey
For this project, I took the journey of my time during the welcome week at Bradley University in the 2021-2022 school year and share as much information as I can about my time. I started by writing down all of the different aspects that I could measure about my journey such as my trips to campus and how I got there, the demographics of the freshman class that I was helping welcome to campus, the days I worked, and the times I work up those days and more! I kept the design on-brand with the colors and aesthetic of Bradley university since it was about my time at Bradley. I tried to include various other aspects of my welcome week journey such as including pictures throughout the week, how many times I rode the golf carts around campus, and a brief paragraph explaining the entire week.

Type Poster
For this project, I was inspired by the iconic club Studio 54. Inspired by the very colorful sets and wild stories told about the club I created a sculpture that incorporated both the expressiveness of Studio 54 and the very explosive death of disco. This sculpture then inspired me to keep creating several posters honoring different aspects of the club. One is a collage of various snapshots of people within the club expressing themselves and being true to themself. Another where I made an advertisement for the last night that the club was open before it was sadly shut down. Bringing them all together I created a font that was organic and moved as if it was in Studio 54. I then took the font and created each letter into a physical sculpture out of melted vinyl records. In the final poster, I took several of the letters and photographed them, and placed them in a still shot as if it was sitting in the club itself.
